Because Bicarb is soft , it doesn't cause sparks on impact ( in fact it is used in fire extinguishers !) so it is safe to use around volatile substances without fear of ignition. and because it washes away safely , there is very little clean-up afterwards.
Often though , industrial jobs require thorough rust removal and for this we use crushed recycled bottle glass . A harder (7 on the Mohs hardness scale - against Soda's 3.5) grit having sharp edges and cheaper than soda because it is made from old bottles! It gives a satin finish on steel and is light enough not to cause distortion in thin pannels.
